Stephanie Pookay isn’t her real name.

Information about her parents isn’t the real deal.

Her curiosity about the special program isn’t supposed to be followed.

But “Stephanie” isn’t your average teenager.

Forced to enroll at Chambers Boarding School when a mission gone wrong leaves her an orphan, Stephanie (as she’s now known) must give up the life she knew as a CIA agent and pretend that she's just a normal girl. The last thing she wants is to stand out, but that’s pretty tough when you have a freaky roommate who only wears black, there’s a blond Barbie out to get you, and the last guy in the world you want giving you attention won’t leave you alone. Add to that a teacher who seems to know more than he should and Stephanie finds that trying to be typical is a lot harder than she thought.

But Chambers isn’t quite what it seems and suddenly Stephanie’s caught up in a mystery that has her pulling out all her undercover spy tricks. The CIA may have given up on her but she refuses to stop when she fears that her new friends might be in danger. The last thing she expects is to be confronted with a ghost from her past…and a killer from her present.

It was a great read and I honestly would have given it a 5 star review if it wasn't for the religious chapter and occasional paragraph references to it.

I read the "Try it free" sample chapters and was hooked. I loved the character and the mystery of the school intrigued me. That's why the first moment my book budget allowed, it was one of my first purchases. I was not disappointed. This is a great book. It has adventure. It has a great mystery. The twists were fun, though I'll admit to suspecting some of them to turn out the way they did. But like a good roller coaster, even when you can see the drop coming, it ended up being a great ride.

But why the 3 star rating? *sigh*

Like I said I read the "Try it free" sample and at no point did it have any indication of having any religious anything. Then I read the book and there was a whole chapter that focused on the character's inner struggle and a way to deal with it with Faith.

Now don't get me wrong, if this is the thing you believe in then great. If it helps you then awesome. I have nothing against religions or freedom of religious beliefs and whatnot.

What bothered me is it came out of nowhere. Chapters passed and had no indication that something like that was coming then bam. I'm being preached to. It wan't subtle or anything. It was just there. The character walks into the room and is hit by it. Some great books have religious overtones, and undertones, but usually it's handled smoother. It builds and kind of let's you know it's coming.

Even in horror (stay with me I have a point) religion in some form or another often shows up, usually to fight the evil menace. But the writers often craft it in a way that tiny indications show the reader or viewer a glimpse of it first. A vampire walks into a room sees a tiny cross and cowers. The cross was there to see even before he walked into the room. In the end you fight him off in a church or by reading verses or something. It doesn't just come out of nowhere and everyone gets that throwing the vampire into a chapel will solve the problem.

Spooky's story has several threads to deal with and this was one of the main ones. It's a logical solution and does happen in real life (even without the teen spy thing). It just could have been handled better.

When I reached the chapter, I did read the beginning of it but it bothered me too much so I had to skim the rest to get to the chapter's end. I really didn't want it to affect my reading experience.

Apart from that, I liked the book. I really did. I'd like to judge the book apart from that problem or my reaction to it (or my problematic reaction depending on your point of view) but I can't. It's an important part of Spooky's journey and as a reviewer my reaction to the way it was written in is important.

3 stars for an otherwise 5 star book. I would have felt better if I was warned what was coming.

Wonderful book! I was hooked after the first few pages and it was hard to put it down. The storyline and characters draw you in and you can't wait to see what comes next. Exciting, funny, sarcastic, and mysterious all at the same time! I normally am not into "youth fiction", but this was a smart and well written book. A new twist on the teenage novel. Loved it and will definitely read the next one!
Spooky was a great read! I literally couldn't put it down, reading the entire thing in one day. The story was the perfect combination of suspense and humor. The characters were engaging in a way that appealed to both teens and adults. I appreciated the honest depiction of the heroine's struggle to reconcile the character of God with her difficult circumstances. I am hoping for a sequel that will tell us more about Spooky's spiritual growth and take us on more sleuthing adventures!
Spooky is a great book for anyone. I could`nt stop reading it until it was finished. I hope Crystal Mazzuca makes another book with even more action! It was well written and had fresh ideas. It really shows amotions of all kinds as I read each page. If you wanted a book for your child to read that wasn`t gory or unapropriate and had lots of action I would suggest you let them read this book. Crystal did a great job and I hope for the best in the next book of action and mystery!
A very enjoyable read! I often read and share books with my teenage daughter, but this time I bought two copies of this book - one for each of us. It was well worth it!! The story and the characters drew me in and I found the book hard to put down. The story line deals with many issues teenagers face in a responsible way, and yet it is a good read for adults as well. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading the sequel to this book (I hope there will be one) to find out what happens to the characters next.
I'm not much into the youth fiction but I had to give this one a try! It was a very good story and it sucked me in. It's one of those books you get lost in and lose track of time. You care for the characters and you can't wait to open the book and see what happens next! Looking forward to reading more books from Crystal!
After her parents' deaths, Stephanie is forced to enroll at Chambers Boarding School. But she can't change who she is, and Stephanie worked undercover with her CIA parents all her life. So when some strange things start happening at Chambers, Stephanie can't help but take a closer look. What's harder for Stephanie, though, it just trying to be a normal teenage girl.

I enjoyed this book. The mystery was engaging, as were the subplots and characters. Stephanie was a spunky heroine with a strong voice that was easy to relate to. If you like reading books like Alex Rider and Gallagher Girls, you'll enjoy this story. I can't wait to see if there is a book two.
Excellent book dealing with issues teens (as well as adults) face in an amazing mystery setting. Wondering who to trust and risking being yourself with others is a challenge we all need to think through. Another life challenge is trying to go it alone or seeking help. The main character Stephanie learns through her adventure and the reader enjoys the ride. This would make a great movie!
