Rhapsody in Black is the second in the Hooded Swan (aka Grainger) series by Stableford, and while it is a good read I find the whole thing a little too dark and gloomy as compared to others in this series. The main character is a gritty and grumpy exaggeration of the man-in-charge of a space ship. Even though technically he's not in charge. However, despite his negativity and foibles one does gain an endearment to Grainger.One thing of note is that Brain Stapleford's knowledge of biology really shines through in parts of this book, making a believable scenario of the centrepiece of the plot. Worth the read.

Rhapsody in Black Hooded Swan Book 2 eBook Brian Stableford Reviews
2nd of the Hooded Swan series but can be read independently. First contact sci-fi. An exploratory ship lands on a planet of humans who hate the surface and live in villages underground. One of the team gets lost and is caught up with disgruntled rebellious natives who stage a do-or-die stand off revolt. The whole book, a short fast read, is dark and claustrophobic. Decent writing, biologically believable center piece to the plot, entertaining page turner.
A dark and depressing piece of story telling - which is fine by me; the purpose of the story is exactly that. A masterful piece of work.
Did not like this one as much as the first. Am waiting to read the sequels, and may not. Just not that exciting for some reason.
This author challenges my imagination, as well as my intelligence through this and other novels in the series. Great reading for relaxation and enjoyment.
