At 17, Rosalind "Lin" Townsend finds herself pregnant and alone. Her father, deeply religious yet cruel, throws her out of the house. Nick Pemberton, her baby's father and the man she naively hoped might marry her, rejects her. Yet even at the lowest point in her life, Lin vows to succeed on her own terms, and to give her son, Will, all the love and happiness she's been denied.

Nineteen years later, Lin has made good on her promises. She's the owner of a thriving diner in her Georgia hometown, and Will has grown into a fine, intelligent young man who's about to start his freshman year and NYU. But when Lin visits New York with Will, she crosses paths with the one man she was sure she'd never see again - Nick Pemberton, now a millionaire CEO, the man who sent back all her letters unopened, marked "Return to Sender". Seeing him fills Lin with anger - and she resolves to right the wrong he did to Will.

Helped by Jason, a hired detective, and her best friend, Sally, Lin sets out to disrupt Nick's life and his finances, with spectacular results. But the truth is more complex and surprising than she imagined. And soon Lin must choose - between the revenge she thought would free her, and the bright new future that's about to be delivered to her door.

Listened to this as an abridged audio and the narrator did a good job, far better than the story and plot. Hate to give low marks, but though the writing was solid, this book had the nastiest set of characters I have ever read or in this case, listened to. And so many of them, too. Usually it's just one nasty character per book, maybe two. Not all of them. =( The heroine was just plain vindictive and difficult to like. Why wait 20 years for revenge? Plus, the ploys she pulled didn't seem possible. The hero was a plain and simple jackass of Olympic proportions, and his wife was just plain evil with a capital E. She should have had horns and a pitchfork. The only nice people in the story are the heroine's son and a secondary character who develops a hard-to-believe crush at first sight on the heroine. Return to Sender (Audible Audio Edition) Fern Michaels Angela Dawe Brilliance Audio Books Reviews

Although she fell back to the ol' sex sells ideology the plot was interesting and it was a different concept. I did enjoy the ending as it was different than what was expected. I just wish that authors didn't feel the need for so much sex and description as if we don't know what happens during sex. Would like to see them use their imaginations and let us use ours. It makes for a better story as most imaginations are far better than a printed version.
This book was excellent throughout until the supposed end. Why cut it off abruptly? What happened to Nick? Did he survive or not? Did Evan and Lin get married? What happened to Buck's wife Chelsea? Such a disappointing and disjointed ending. Ruined the story.
I will begin by saying that I love Fern Michaels' books. I am a huge fan of her writing.

I really enjoyed this book. There did seem to be events in the beginning that could have used a bit more time with and there were at times events that seemed too clean cut. I found the ending that way too. Similar to the monster crest of a roller coaster hill, you slowly creep up the to big moment, and then wham, the moment is over in a nice little package in the fewest pages possible. The ending could've easily gone another 20 pages or so to give a more rounded end result, in my opinion. Overall, it was a good read and I'm glad I took the time.
Though I liked the story line Ms Michaels did not trandition between character plits well. It was abrubt without any markings. One had to reread paragraphs to see which belonged to which characters. Some of the story was really far fetched like the night Chelsea was taken out of her apartment as well as Nick and the Ambien. I like my novels to be believable and parts of this were not.
I have rarely felt motivated to write a bad review for a book, but this book was painful to finish. The only reason I kept reading was that because of the synopsis, I kept hoping the main character would redeem herself. I waited in vain. Additionally, some of the plot lines that I hoped would help the book end on a positive note were instead left completely hanging and unresolved at the end. I cannot recommend this book to anyone.

Nearly every character in this book is self-centered, morally bankrupt, and unlikeable. And most remain unlikeable throughout. The main character, who you are presumably supposed to be rooting for is a character who suddenly abandons years of being a responsible, caring person for petty revenge that doesn't even make sense. Except that her revenge isn't petty at all and involves awful things that in real life would bring hefty prison sentences, though we're assured in the book that even if she gets caught, she'd do a couple years of jail time.

The story line is ridiculous. This woman made no attempt to legally get child support, and for 19 years she's fine with that before she decides to get revenge simply because she sees the guy somewhere? And her rags to riches story has no basis in reality, either. Even her abusive chidhood was not well thought out. In the time the story is told, the obvious signs of abuse she displayed at school would have certainly gotten attention, not the blind eye it got. Perhaps the biggest disappointment of all is that she has spent 19 years hating someone because of assumptions she made and because she couldn't be bothered to read what was actually written on the returned letters. The other major characters are unrealistic and very inconsistent, as well.

What little romance there is happens almost as if the author realized that some sort of romance needed to be shoehorned into the story quickly before she got to the end. It was very out of the blue, and too sudden and completely implausible. In real life, after knowing what has been going on, the guy would certainly have run the other way. Not to mention that a doctor wouldn't be asking a patient out on a date and discussing another patient with her when earlier he made the point that he couldn't legally do that.

Last, but not least, there are two instances where a story is being told to someone and then told to someone else where a couple of pages are repeated word-for-word. It happens when the main character is telling someone a story, and again when another character is speaking to someone recording a video of them. That's the kind of thing even a junior high English teacher would fail a student for in a writing assignment.

Overall, a very poorly written and unsatisfying book.
Some people get all the breaks, and with some, it seems like they will never climb above their current station. Fern Michaels isn't one to dwellat length on the "how" her characters rise above their poor status, but she never fails in the area of letting us see what can be done if you have enough money including donations to important causes, of course. It took lots of money to accomplish the plans of each of the characters from Ed to Mario. Using these two names gives away nothing since using any other names could reveal the plot, and it's more fun reading the book to find out the who and why. Michaels did not dash this book off to reach a deadline as some of her sisterhood series seem to do. It's worth the read if you want something not deep but guaranteed to hold your interest to the very end.
The book kept my interest from start to finish. I could not put the book down. I read this in just two sitting.

I one thing I did not like was rereading her story so many times as she told different people. I thought I had the ending figured out, but Fern added her twist to the story, and made a better ending.

I don't want to give away the story, but Fern has you relating to the hardships a single mother has raising a child. Without help of the family and being rejected by the rich father.

This one of her better books, and I think you should read it
